in the city

while sister Maggie was in town, our parents went on a 'family outing' kick. no problems though, everything was an interest to everyone and it was actually mostly enjoyable. these trips included the st. louis art museum, very good restaurants (including the shaved duck and iron barley), and the newly renovated st. louis city library.

when we were but wee children, we lived in an apartment downtown for awhile, right across from my dad's work (which was a toy company). we spent the majority of our time riding tricycles around dad's office or in the library for story time. It's been fixed up for awhile now, but it was the first time I had been there since I was a kid. I was glad they kept it old school library and didn't get too modern.

(not actually the library, but across the street)

we then went to the sculpture park in city garden. I enjoyed most of the sculptures, including this very large pink suit.

well, that's all. merry christmas, happy new year, and all that shit. at least I get to sleep in still.

a homemade summer

Last week, as I browsed the shelves at my local library in desperate need of a light summer read, Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life fell into my lap. And oh, what a blessing it was. You might be familiar with Molly's blog, that charming spot of the internet with the loveliest of photographs and the tastiest of lemon yogurt cakes. Her book (regrettably lacking in photographs, though making up for it with illustrations) ventures into all the struggles and triumphs of adolescence in the Great Plains, love in Paris, and the most adorable engagement I have had the pleasure to read about, and still always comes back to the kitchen. Happily for us readers, Molly shares the recipes connected to her stories, and what wonderful recipes they are.

This is my kind of cookbook. Food is always more than just food, and when people share recipes for berry pound cake or slow roasted tomatoes or potato salad, they always share more than just recipes. I have been doing a lot of cooking this summer. And not just because I like to eat food (which I do). Because I like sitting around a table with people I love and seeing them smile. Because fresh garlic and roasted onions and blueberry muffins make me feel so tangibly, so terribly, so beautifully human. Thanks Molly, for saying it all and for sharing.

a lovely photo from dsbrennan on Etsy.
and this specimen was found on the Selby.

while searching the bargain basement at the Book House (which is apparently haunted), maggie and I found some charming art books, poetry, and James Joyce. I will have to photograph them and show you. and i should post about my new endeavor (spinning). and i should also study for exams. so much to be done. summer break is coming.... it's coming
