in the city

while sister Maggie was in town, our parents went on a 'family outing' kick. no problems though, everything was an interest to everyone and it was actually mostly enjoyable. these trips included the st. louis art museum, very good restaurants (including the shaved duck and iron barley), and the newly renovated st. louis city library.

when we were but wee children, we lived in an apartment downtown for awhile, right across from my dad's work (which was a toy company). we spent the majority of our time riding tricycles around dad's office or in the library for story time. It's been fixed up for awhile now, but it was the first time I had been there since I was a kid. I was glad they kept it old school library and didn't get too modern.

(not actually the library, but across the street)

we then went to the sculpture park in city garden. I enjoyed most of the sculptures, including this very large pink suit.

well, that's all. merry christmas, happy new year, and all that shit. at least I get to sleep in still.

hippie science.
(oh frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! the protein chain came streaming out!)

biology has never been so delightful.

it's long but worth it. one must watch it in its entirety.

and my concentration for AP studio art is (basically) things my science teacher says (or things I doodle in science class)
for example: a Hindu buffalo demon/ 4th dimensional bison

and a galaxy/star/embryo (who knows?)

end.

artsy fartsy

so my art history teacher showed me this little nun who is also an art critic. she's absolutely adorable and actually rather interesting. her video about the photograph piss christ is fascinating.
just super cute.

and apparently I look like someone on america's next top model? someone in walgreens told me to watch it on friday. well I didn't. but someone else also told me that. I'm not sure if this is particularly a great thing.
but my art history teacher told me I reminded her of a Modigliani painting. I first thought of his blank eyes, but she reminded me of the quirky emotions the emote.

best compliment.

wall and piece

Last night I saw Exit Through the Gift Shop for the first time. If you haven't seen it, just do. Then go tag something.

american wilderness

Ranger Doug sells reproductions of the WPA National Parks posters. I love Ranger Doug. Recently my dad sent me two packages of Doug's postcards (these are big packages; i have a lot of postcards hanging on my wall). The color palate and the block print aesthetic does a lot for me. I am particularly fond of the twilight purples burnt oranges. Also, the services the posters advertise: "field trips,""motor caravans," "nature walks". Oh! Adventure!

I think I love these posters because I want to see the America they portray, an America beautiful and wild and various, in spite of the depression or the war. I want to roam across this America. Nature, big and eternal as it is, forgets war and poverty and suffering, and I, an American wanderer, clamor to be immersed in nature, to exchange self-consciousness for the openness of air, and to feel myself not an American citizen, but a part of the American landscape.

specimens in watercolor

Holly (the artist behind gollybard) is an amazing creator. She creates watercolor paintings of nature, insects, birds, and much more. She sells her paintings on Etsy and her work has been used in other sellers jewelry work (for example: this rustic lamb and fence magnetic locket by polarity)

Not only does Holly have great talent but a great heart. With every sell from her Heart collection, she donates $5 to So Others Might Eat, a organization in the City of Washington who helps the poor and homeless.

gollybard was also a featured seller on Etsy! Read interview here.

Visit the gollybard blog (one of my new favorites)

found paper, small scissors

I have always been fond of Agnes Montgomery's collage pieces. In fact, it is possible I have already posted some of her artwork on this blog. Oh well, a few more can't hurt. The second piece has always vaguely reminded me of something, but I can't quite remember exactly what. And the last one looks like an illustration for a book of fairy tales.

in the vernacular

John Gall posted these found photos on his blog a long while back, and I recently found them on my desktop, and thought that I might post them here. I am always amazed by photographs like these.
